How NOT to Rot in Your Job You may have an inkling that the time has cometh for you to seek pastures new, or you might just want to make sure that you are doing the right thing by staying put. Either way, go through these points and see if they apply to you. 1. Sense of purpose Does your job require you to perform meaningful and fulfilling tasks? This is subjective and can only be answered by your own satisfaction after a day of hard work. You will want to feel that your effort has made a difference to your customers and is important to the business of your company. Ask yourself how the company would be affected if you left. 2. Comfort Zone Is your job fairly easy? Is it boring and does it lack the challenge at times? You might have done it for a while and realized that experience does pay off in this particular job. This is true but too much experience of only one position will hamper your career as you will lack the holistic view of your industry. 3. Development Are you still learning? They say the rich never work for money, only to learn. You probably need the money but if you are no longer learning, you are not doing your career or yourself any favors. The goal is to make money and learn. Ask yourself, when was the last time you received relevant and high-quality training? Is anybody mentoring you and making sure you develop? What have you learned since you started in this position and what do you think you will learn if you stay? 4. Career opportunities Advancement opportunities, is there a clear career path for you or will you most likely stay in the same role for the foreseeable future? If you are doing a good job, your boss should tell you what to expect and set out a plan for you to progress. If he or she takes little interest in your progress, this might indicate that you are not in pole position for any ladder-climbing anytime soon. 5. The people Do you get on with your colleagues? As some of us spend more waking time with coworkers than our families, it is integral you enjoy working with the people around you. No need to be best pals with everybody but being able to work well together is the least you should expect. 6. Travel Location is your commute bearable or is it getting the better of you? Most people can do an hour’s commute each way for some time but unless you can be productive (e.g. laptop on the train), this is a waste of time and probably not sustainable in the long run. Some employers will offer the option of home office which certainly helps. 7. Balance Life/work balance â€" do you switch off when you get home or are you constantly checking emails and thinking about work? You shouldn’t have to be a work zombie Monday through Friday, your relationships outside work should not suffer due to your mental fatigue. 8. Remuneration Do you believe you are paid enough for your effort? How do you fare against an industry benchmark? This question is not about cash compensation, it encompasses your total package (paid vacation, perks, bonus, etc). Tally everything up and see how it compares. Conclusion If most of these points apply to you, have a serious think about your future and work out a roadmap to where you really should be. What can we learn from high-profile figures who are able to transcend cultures and garner brand loyalty from New York to Timbuktu? So I took a moment to think about the traits of a personal brand that in my mind are embraced anywhere you go. (Disclaimer: These traits are solely based on my personal view and are not grounded in any actual statistical research!) 1. Heartful   Strong personal brands put 100% of their heart into what they do. They literally exude passion in whatever it is that drives them and this is contagious. Loyal brand followers tout these personal brands because they feel this love, passion, and joy themselves. The important thing to note here is that heartful personal brands do not brag about who they are or what they do. Examples: Martin Luther King, Tony Robbins, Mother Teresa 2. Mindful   A well grounded personal brand is one that most people in any culture can easily relate to. Mindful personal brands stay in the moment and actually pull us into this moment with them. They embrace the value of silence and reflection. They focus on those around them and not on themselves. In most cases, such brands only need to smile and we feel at ease. This is obviously an ideal outcome for any employer, recruiter, and hiring manager. However, what if there was greater value in hiring for development? In this current day and age, we know that a business should be flexible, agile and adaptable at all times. They need to have the working environment that is willing to change to align with longer-term goals. Most of all, however, they need to have the working environment that is willing to evolve and learn new skills and new requirements to adapt to this change. Obviously, an ongoing learning and development strategy is imperative to this, however, can hiring the purple squirrel actually be detrimental to achieving this longer-term goal? What is a purple squirrel? Ultimately, the purple squirrel is the perfect fit. They have the right education, years of experience, skill set and industry certifications to meet the needs. The purple squirrel is rare, something that for many exists only in folklore or stories of past. If a purple squirrel is identified, generally a business will do a lot to actually engage that purple squirrel as soon as possible. What value can a purple squirrel bring? The purple squirrel can bring immediate traction to a business. It is expected they will be able to immediately undertake their role with minimal transitional issues. That they will be able to pretty quickly deliver a return on investment, and most of all, be an asset to the business. Why shouldn’t I wait for the purple squirrel? We are all well aware that waiting for the perfect fit will take time. During that time, we wait. We may even expand our resources and from there bring in additional costs. We may spend more time, more resources, and more money, in the hope that we can find that purple squirrel. All of this will add ultimately to the overall return on investment a placement can bring. We run a risk that the person we looked over because of that not so perfect fit will not be available even when we identify that our purple squirrel is just that, a folklore. What value would not hiring a purple squirrel to bring? Innovation and diversity are fundamentally what we need to talk about for businesses moving into the new world of work. A new perspective, a new approach and a different degree of experience will greatly influence an innovative environment; because the way of doing things differently may be extremely beneficial to a changing business. Additionally, bringing in someone who has development needs but a strong passion and desire for your brand, your product, and your customers is the foundation for a very successful and dedicated employee. How can I influence this with a client or with the reporting manager? The greatest challenge when hiring is being able to ensure that there is great value in being flexible in the hiring process. Teaching someone to look beyond what a person’s role title has been, or product experience is, can be challenging in an environment with very stringent delivery targets. The first step is to work as an advisor. Change the approach of your conversation to focus on the value of other perspectives, different experience and how this aligns with the organizations future direction. Sometimes there is also great value in bringing in some examples of where this may have worked in your experience previously. We all appreciate that this is a big shift in the mindset of many managers, businesses and reporting line managers. Our roles in HR are to take them on a new journey of recruitment and hiring to align with the expected changes in the future. We can achieve this by starting to create our own stories and not ones that may be reliant on something that may not exist.
